UPDATE: Alleged Airport Gun Grabber ID'ed

A drug-addled man who allegedly grabbed a deputy's gun at John Wayne Airport on Friday afternoon was arrested and jailed, according to the Sheriff's Department.

Leonardo Alvarez, 31, had passed through security and was in the gate area of the airport when he approached a deputy from behind and pulled the officer's handgun from its holster, authorities said.

The deputy and another Sheriff's Department employee recovered the weapon from him and no shots were fired, officials said Friday night.

The man, who was not identified, told authorities he had consumed narcotics throughout the day. He faces charges of assault on a peace officer, according to a press release.

Authorities said they believe the 2:45 p.m. incident was an isolated event. The sheriff's employee who assisted in the arrest suffered an injury to his hand and was treated at a nearby hospital, the press release said.

Still no word on where Alvarez is from or where he was going.
