Men In High-End Cars Targeted In Armed Carjackings At Fashion Island

Suspects robbed one man and shot at another in the parking lot of the Newport Beach upscale shopping center.

NEWPORT BEACH, CA — Suspects robbed one man driving a white Rolls Royce and attempted to rob a second man driving a yellow Ferrari in the Fashion Island parking lot Monday night, authorities said.

The robbery was reported at around 11:30 p.m. Monday at a parking lot at Fashion Island, where witnesses told authorities that three men wearing ski masks approached the victims and stole one man's watch and wallet, NBC 4 reported.

The victim driving the Ferrari drove away as the suspect attempted to carjack him, NBC 4 reported. One of the suspects, who was armed with a handgun, shot at the victim and shattered one of the cars windows, the report said.

According to KTLA, the driver of the Ferrari eventually stopped at a Chevron gas station down the road, where he assessed himself for injury and found that he had been cut due to the broken glass.

The suspects were described as three men who left the area in a blue Kia sedan. As of Tuesday, they had not been arrested.

The attempted carjackings come after a reported daylight robbery in July that turned bloody at the same Orange County mall, in which a 68-year-old tourist was dragged by the suspect's getaway car and killed.

A woman who frequents Fashion Island and lives down the street told KTLA that she is "in shock" and worried about the surge of crime in the area.

"There’s been so much of this stuff in our neighborhood," Angie Francis told KTLA. "It’s scary…I’d rather not go to a mall and fear for my life."
