NEWPORT BEACH, CA — Over 24 students from the Santa Ana charter school, El Sol, who've shown an interest in science and medicine, 'checked-in' on Monday for a look at what real life surgery is like.
The science minded students headed to Hoag Orthopedic Institute Surgery Center - Newport Beach to learn more about the variety of growing jobs in health care.
Students donned their scrubs and participated in a mock surgery. Some teens played patient, while others acted as surgeons, nurses and more.

"The aim of the mock surgery was to spark their interest in pursuing medicine as a career, particularly the burgeoning field of 'outpatient' care," a spokesperson said.
All students were able to learn directly from surgeons and other clinicians who conducted a question and answer session, and led them in surgery-related science experiments.
