A Newport Beach Homicide Investigation Leads Police to Extradite Nevada Suspect

An almost two year old Newport Beach murder investigation has detectives awaiting the extradition of the prime suspect in that case.

NEWPORT BEACH, CA—A suspicious death of an elderly man was ruled a homicide in Newport Beach over one year ago. This ongoing murder investigation has culminated in the extradition of a Carson City, Nevada resident.

"On April 11, 2015, the Newport Beach Police Department responded to a residence in the 2300 block of 16th Street reference a reported death," Newport Beach Police Department Press Information Officer Jennifer Manzella said in recent release.

The deceased was identified as Abelardo Lopez Estacion, an 81-year-old resident of the home where he was located.

"The circumstances of the death appeared suspicious and Detectives have been actively investigating the case for the past 16 months," Manzella reported.

During the course of the investigation, Detectives determined Mr. Estacion’s death was a homicide. Anthony Thomas Garcia, a 56-year-old resident of Carson City, Nevada, was identified as a suspect in the case.

"On July 28, 2016, Newport Beach Police Detectives apprehended Mr. Garcia in Carson City, Nevada," she said. "(Garcia) is currently being detained there, awaiting extradition to California."
