Newport Beach Lifeguards Pass 100 Years Of Watching Waves: Report
After a century of serving as the guardians of the shores, Newport Beach lifeguards are observing their long history of service.
NEWPORT BEACH, CA — Newport Beach lifeguards recently passed one hundred years of service on the city's popular shorelines, the Orange County Register reported.
The Newport Beach lifeguards history of service started back in 1923 in response to the growing number of people visiting the beach city's shores.
"People would go out in these waters, these massive rip currents and they would die out here," Newport Beach Chief Lifeguard Brian O'Rourke said during a city presentation. "And there was a community on the beach who said, 'We need to provide a service to protect these beaches.'"
