Twilight fishing is heating up for anglers on boats out of Newport Harbor fishing the Huntington Flats from sunset to midnight.
On one after-dark run up the Newport coast this week, 32 anglers hauled 245 barracuda while fishing aboard the Freelance out of .
The Nautilus out of has been targeting sand bass on nightly trips. On a recent run, anglers pulled up 318 of the migratory fish.

Daytime barracuda action slowed down this week, but calico bass fishing has kicked into high gear. The Western Pride caught up with the calicos Wednesday, with 75 anglers hauling in 75 of them along with 29 sand bass and a halibut.

Bongos III this week brought four anglers to Catalina and caught limits of calico bass, 16 barracuda, seven rockfish and a bonito.

The California Fish and Game Commission voted Thursday to “green-light” a plan, created under the state's , that will close areas of Southern California’s coastal waters to anglers.
Areas fished by Newport anglers that will be effected are Laguna and Naples Reef. Further north, Malibu and Point Dume also will be impacted. California Fish and Game will be getting out the word on the exact location of the 53 closures before the plan takes effect Oct. 1.
