Newport Beach Gun-Brandisher Arrested: Cops

NEWPORT BEACH, CA —Newport Beach Police arrested a man who brandished a gun at a black man in during Newport Beach protests Wednesday.

The incident, which took place near the intersection of 30th Street and Newport Boulevard on Wednesday afternoon, was videoed by witnesses. As police sought more information in the incident, the victim at last stepped forward.

"A positive identification was made," according to the Newport Beach Police Department.

Police arrested Newport Beach resident Travis White, 48, Thursday evening according to the Newport Beach Police Department. He was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, according to police.

The altercation, shown in the video below, show suspect and victim were involved in a "verbal altercation" when the suspect brandished a black handgun, pulled from his backpack.

A witness from the scene described the gun-brandisher as "having used racial slurs before pulling out the weapon."

The video shows protester barricading himself behind a car, while a shirtless man, wearing a bathing suit, flip flops, baseball cap, and sunglasses aimed a gun to the sky and fled from the area.

The Newport Beach Police Department thanked everyone who provided information to Detectives about this event.

Also in Newport Beach on Wednesday, one person was arrested after driving a car through a crowd of protesters.
