No Jumping From This Newport Beach Bridge, Cops Say
After a man jumped from the Lido Bridge into a boat, injuring a female passenger, local cops are stepping up to stop future bridge jumping.
NEWPORT BEACH, CA — The Lido Bridge, which serves to connect residents of Lido Isle to Balboa Peninsula, has seen a rash of "bridge jumpers" in recent days.
On Wednesday, a man jumped and landed on a passing vessel, the city of Newport Beach said. Whether or not the boy was attempting to jump onto or over the boat was unclear from the above video.
"The suspect fled the scene, and a female passenger suffered non-life threatening injuries and was transported for medical attention," officials said.

This was the City’s first reported incident involving a jumper landing on a vessel, they said. Now, they are taking bridge jumping to the next level.

Starting Thursday, the City’s lifeguards planned to maintain a presence through the Labor Day holiday in the waters adjacent to the Lido Bridge.
"The City has seen an increase in reports of people jumping from the bridge, which is a violation of the City’s Municipal Code," the city said. "In response to increase reports of bridge jumping, and a recent incident involving a passing vessel, the City of Newport Beach is posting lifeguard personnel to the Lido Bridge area through Labor Day."
Lido Bridge is the only connection for residents on Lido Isle to the Balboa Peninsula and is a
busy thoroughfare for vessels operating in Newport Harbor.
Even though “no jumping or diving” signs are posted along the bridge, this summer the City has seen an increase in activity and will be stepping up enforcement efforts, they said.
City lifeguards will be posted on the bridge and the adjacent beach area every day through Labor Day weekend, In addition, lifeguards will use their patrol boat to monitor the area
from the water.
Jumping from the bridge is prohibited by the Newport Beach Municipal Code and violators are
subject to citation, they said.
