O.C. Hospitals Rank Among Top In State

ORANGE COUNTY, CA – Two Orange County hospitals ranked among the best in the state in U.S. News and World Report's annual list released Tuesday.

Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach placed eighth in the state and third-best in the Southland.

Hoag also ranked 25th in the nation in orthopedics, 27th in gastroenterology and GI surgery, 46th in pulmonology and 47th in geriatrics.

"Hoag's steady ascension to one of the state's and nation's top hospitals is a testament to our highly talented and compassionate staff who provide the highest quality patient care every day," Hoag's president and chief executive, Robert Braithwaite, said. "We are extremely honored to be named the third best hospital in the LA metro area -- one of the largest and most competitive health care markets in the nation."

UC Irvine Medical Center also made the list of top hospitals for the 17th consecutive year. UCI in Orange placed 11th in the state and sixth in the Southland.

Federoff, the chief executive of UC Irvine Health.

The methodology used by U.S. News is based largely on objective measures with more than 70 percent of the rankings relying on such data. The rankings also took into account survey answers from more than 125,000 physicians across the country about reputation. U.S. News also looked at five years of Medicare data and the number of patients treated in hospitals. The methodology was also updated to avoid penalizing hospitals for treating low-income patients or for accepting high-risk cases transferred from other hospitals. For the best regional hospitals, procedures and conditions rankings were emphasized more than specialty rankings.
