OC Marathon Road Closures Announced: Waze Around Traffic In 2021

NEWPORT BEACH, CA — On Sunday, the 17th Anniversary OC Marathon will begin. The event which typically runs in May has been rerouted to November due to the coronavirus. Runners have prepared, practiced and are gearing up to set foot across Orange County.

Along the route, spectator enthusiasm is expected and wanted, they say.

"We hope you look forward to this day with a sense of pride, as the Orange County community will once again be on display for runners from around the country and the world to see," an event organizer says. "The runners greatly appreciate the enthusiasm you have shown as they pass through your neighborhoods – the cheering, the candy and fruit, colorful balloons, cool mist from a garden hose – all great gestures that make this event so wonderful."

Road closures and delays start at 4 a.m. in Newport Beach, Santa Ana and Costa Mesa.

Closures can last —in some areas— through 3 p.m.

"We understand the race impacts your routine for a few hours on a spring Sunday, but we’d like to share with you the positive aspects of the race of which you may not be aware," they said.

• Over $15 million was pumped into the Orange County economy as a result of the race.
• The OC Marathon generates over $7 million for charity.
• Local charities such as Susan G. Komen, John Wayne Cancer Foundation, and the OC Bar Foundation, to name a few, have all benefited from the event.
• The OC Marathon Foundation heads up one of the largest youth-running programs in the nation.
• The Kids Run the OC training program is in 170 Orange County Schools and nearly 10,000 kids will be joining the race in 2021.
