Police Caution Against Scam Extorting Newport Beach Residents
Newport Beach police officers warned the public against a new scam targeting residents.
NEWPORT BEACH, CA — The Newport Beach Police Department warned the public against a scam targeting residents this week.
According to the department, residents should be wary if a person claiming to be an officer with the Newport Beach Police Department attempts to extort money from them.
A statement released by the Newport Beach Police Department said that the report was made by a person who received calls from an individual claiming to be an NBPD officer. The caller said they had warrants and missed jury duty before asking for payment over the phone, authorities said.

"The Newport Beach Police Department will not contact you to request money and does not accept any kind of payment for legitimate services over the phone," the statement read.
