Promotion Ceremony For Newport Beach Fire Department

Promotions for many at Newport Beach Fire Department.

NEWPORT BEACH, CA — On Tuesday, October 24 at 8:30 a.m., the City of Newport Beach will hold a promotional ceremony for Newport Beach Fire Chief Chip Duncan, Assistant Fire Chief Jeff Boyles, as well as six other members of the department. This will be the first promotional ceremony in the department’s history that includes promotions for all ranks. The ceremony will be held at the Newport Beach Civic Center Council Chambers with overflow seating available in the adjacent Civic Center Community Room.

Fire Chief Chip Duncan is the first internally promoted Fire Chief in 31 years for the Newport Beach Fire Department. Chief Duncan has over 32 years’ experience in the fire service, 29 years with the Newport Beach Fire Department. Since beginning his career in Newport Beach in March of 1987, Chief Duncan has promoted through the ranks from Firefighter, Firefighter Paramedic, Fire Captain, Battalion Chief, Training Battalion Chief, Assistant Chief and now Fire Chief. He has also served as a Haz-Mat Technician, Fire Investigator and Urban Search and Rescue Team member. Chief Duncan comes from a family dedicated to the fire service with his father (retired), brother and son all serving as firefighters.

Following the promotion of Chief Duncan, Battalion Chief Jeff Boyles will be promoted to Assistant Fire Chief. Chief Boyles also comes from a fire service family with his father (retired)
a long-time firefighter and Fire Chief. Chief Boyles has 24 years’ experience in the fire service working his first six years in San Bernardino. He started his career with Newport Beach in 2000 and has worked as a Firefighter, Fire Paramedic, Fire Captain, Battalion Chief and Training Chief. As the Assistant Fire Chief, Boyles will be responsible for fire operations, training and community outreach. He is filling the position previously held by Chief Duncan.

Also being promoted are Fire Captain Nic Lucas to Battalion Chief, Fire Engineer Matt Ambrose to Fire Captain, Fire Paramedic Matthew Reis to Fire Captain, Firefighter John
Mollica to Fire Engineer, Firefighter Matt Skelly to Fire Engineer and Firefighter Anthony Terzo to Fire Paramedic.
