NEWPORT BEACH, CA — Some Orange County beaches are about to get a lot sandier, after a long-awaited replenishment project began this week, The Orange County Register reported.

The 1.1 million cubic yards of sand comes from heavy machinery and equipment set up on the beach at Surfside in north Orange County, the report said. The sand will find its way onto beaches in Newport Beach, San Clemente and Huntington Beach.

The federally-funded project is aimed at preserving natural Orange County shoreline and combating beach erosion.
