Woman Ran Down In Fatal Newport Beach Hit-And-Run

The crash was reported in the area of 20th Street and West Balboa Boulevard on the Newport Peninsula, authorities said.

NEWPORT BEACH, CA — A woman was arrested this week and faces charges of fatally hitting a pedestrian with her car before fleeing the scene, the Newport Beach Police Department reported.

Authorities were dispatched to the area of 20th Street and W. Balboa Boulevard on Friday, Jan. 22 at 12:14 a.m. Upon arriving, police found a woman within traffic lanes suffering from major injuries, police said.

According to police, the suspect vehicle fled the scene prior to NBPD's arrival. The victim, who was not identified by police, died at the scene.

After an initial investigation, authorities found that the victim was crossing legally within a marked crosswalk when the suspect vehicle failed to yield, crashed into the pedestrian, before immediately driving away.

After gathering several investigative leads, the NBPD was able to contact a suspect — who was ultimately arrested and booked into Orange County Jail for felony hit and run. She was not identified by authorities.
