1 Year Later: Who Gunned Down Studio City Man in His Driveway? [VIDEO]

On Nov. 18, 2010, Jong Kim was shot in front of his home and his killers remain unidentified.

Editor's Note: This story originally ran on July 19.

When Jong Kim’s outside his home near Universal Studios last Nov. 18, they left a distinctive clue.

The three men had driven to Kim’s house on the 10600 block of Chiquita Street in Studio City near the border with Toluca Lake and North Hollywood, in a car with an unusual two-toned paint job. The Honda Prelude, a 1988-1992 model with a sun roof, after-market rims and modified exhaust, was caught on surveillance tape. The images were shown here and in a few other local media outlets—but, eight months later, detectives have not yet found the car, which could possibly lead them to the killers.

“I would like it shown everywhere,” Detective Mark O’Donnell of the LAPD’s North Hollywood Station said, referring to surveillance pictures of the car.

There is a $50,000 reward for information leading to arrest of Kim's killers. See the attached video where the reward was announced.

Here’s what detectives know about the killing:

After leaving the liquor store he owned in Lawndale, Kim arrived home just before 1 a.m. on Nov. 18, 2010. He was confronted by two of the men “as soon as he pulled into his driveway,” O’Donnell said. One of the men opened fire, shooting at least five rounds, hitting Kim in the neck, O'Donnell said. Kim later died.

After the shooting, the two men fled in the getaway car driven by the third man, O'Donnell said.

Police believe the men knew Kim’s routine and were lying in wait, O’Donnell said. Investigators found “nearly $3,000” on Kim, he said. Still, detectives have not ruled out robbery as a motive. “It’s hard to say if the crooks got spooked,” O’Donnell said. “Maybe a neighbor came out.”

It was not unusual for Kim to carry cash on a regular basis, the detective said. “He used it to buy supplies.”

What is unusual is that no one has been linked to such an odd-looking car. Shown here are the surveillance tape images caught in an alley near Kim’s home.

The car may not look the same now, but last November, the Honda Prelude had that two-toned paint, which, O’Donnell said, could be a paint job or a primer. The car also had a modified exhaust.

Kim’s wife was asleep in the couple’s home when her 50-year-old husband was shot and killed, he said. The neighborhood is not known for violence.

Anyone with information that might help police find the killers is asked to contact O’Donnell at 818-623-4075.
