February’s Gene Autry Double Feature theme is “Environment”
Several of Gene Autry’s musical B-Westerns addressed environmental issues of the time that are still important today. February’s films, Back in the Saddle andRiders of the Whistling Pines, each feature a story line involving mankind’s use of the land and the consequences and responsibilities involved.
Synopsis:
Back in the Saddle (1941)
Republic Pictures (71 minutes)
A copper mine is opened near the ranch that young Tom Bennett has just inherited, and the pollution from the mine is fast poisoning the cattle on the range. Gene Autry tries to solve the problem by reasoning with both sides, but young Tom’s impetuous behavior leads everyone into more trouble than they had expected. Originally released in 1941, Back in the Saddle features Gene’s signature song, his lovable sidekick Smiley Burnette, and Mary Lee as “Patsy.

Riders of the Whistling Pines (1949)

Synopsis:
Gene Autry is an ex-forest ranger who believes he has accidentally shot the father of attractive Helen Carter, but soon learns that the guilt lies with some unscrupulous men trying to prevent discovery of a destructive tussock moth infestation threatening the timber. Can Gene employ crop-dusting and modern chemicals to save the day or will the evil logging baron use those techniques against him? With musical groups the Pinafores and Cass County Boys plus Champion, World’s Wonder Horse.
