Between 1846 and 1873, California’s Indian population plunged from approximately 150,000 to 30,000. UCLA Professor Benjamin Madley uncovers the full extent of the slaughter: the involvement of state and federal officials, the taxpayer dollars that supported the violence, indigenous resistance, who did the killing, and why the killings ended. Madley’s book is a comprehensive and chilling history of an American genocide.
Madley is Assistant Professor of History at UCLA. He received his Ph.D. at Yale University and was an Andrew Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in the History Department and Native American Studies Program at Dartmouth College. This book is based on his dissertation, which won the Frederick W. Reinecke Dissertation Prize at Yale and the 2010 Phi Alpha Theta/Westerners International Dissertation Prize.
There will be a book signing following the program
