Jose Maranon was booked into Van Nuys Jail and his bail was set at $2 million in connection with the hit-and-run crash, police said.
The 40-year-old was in a Mercedes speeding around 10:30 p.m. Monday on Van Nuys Boulevard near Sherman Way when he struck a man who was crossing the street so forcefully that the pedestrian was thrown before colliding with the road, according to police. Maranon then drove away without stopping or helping the man, police said.
The pedestrian, who was in his 30s, died at the scene, according to police.
An investigation led law enforcement to Maranon, who was taken into custody, according to police.
