Brush Fire Breaks Out In Griffith Park

LOS ANGELES, CA —

Firefighters on the ground and in the air worked Friday to extinguish a 30-acre brush fire in Griffith Park near the Los Angeles Zoo, which was closed for the day as a precaution.

The fire was reported about 7:10 a.m. in a remote area of the park south of Zoo Drive, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. One firefighter was taken to a hospital for treatment of a "lower extremity" injury described as non-life-threatening.

Fire engines were not able to access the location due to heavy brush and steep terrain, so ground crews had to hike into the area as air crews working to help prevent the flames from spreading.

By early afternoon, the fire was listed as 60 percent contained. Firefighters reported before noon that they had stopped the forward progress of the flames.

Zoo officials said they evacuated "bird show animals and some smaller primates" as a precaution.
