City to Consider Restricting Street Parking Around Hollywood Sign

The City Council will vote on a proposal to further restrict parking in the neighborhoods surrounding the Hollywood sign.

Street parking in several neighborhoods around the Hollywood Sign could be further restricted under a proposal that will be considered tomorrow by the City Council.

The Hollywoodland Homeowners Association wants the city to expand restrictions in five existing preferential parking districts from the current weekend hours to seven days a week.

Only residents who pay an annual fee to the city Transportation Department for a placard are permitted to park on the street during select hours in preferential parking districts.

According to a motion by Councilman Tom LaBonge, increasing those hours is necessary because tourists continue to park on neighborhood streets while visiting the Hollywood Sign.

“As the popularity of the Hollywood Sign and the Griffith Park continued to increase with the public and tourists, street parking has impacted the immediate area,” according to LaBonge’s motion.

Residents of the area asked LaBonge during a committee meeting last week to push through the amendment during his final weeks in office. LaBonge will be termed-out in July.

The expanded hours for the parking districts were backed by the City Council’s five-member Transportation Committee, and will go to a vote by the full council tomorrow.
