Colfax Charter Elementary Joins 'Wake Up California' Rally
Teachers, students, and parents wear pajamas and chant slogans in support of public school funding.
Teachers, students and parents at Colfax Charter Elementary School in Valley Village showed up this morning in their pajamas for the state-wide “Wake-Up California” campaign in support of public schools. Their goal was to connect hands around the perimeter of Colfax. About 300 supporters showed up waving signs and chanting “Save Our Schools!” “No More Cuts,” and “Governor Brown, Don’t be a Clown.”
They might have reached their goal had the 8:10 a.m. school bell not rung. All students without parents present were requested to return to class. The protesters walked around the school, and then drank coffee, courtesy of Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf.
This event was part of a state-wide, multi-city day of action supporting K-12 education, sponsored by the non-profit parent organization Educate Our State. This group strives to reform public educations funding at the state level, and rallies were held throughout the state, including one by Carpenter Charter Elementary and Walter Reed Middle School at Ventura Boulevard and Laurel Canyon. They are advocating that legislators support our Governor’s “May Revise” budget which “reflects the understanding that schools have been underfunded for years and there is nothing left to cut,” according to Educate Our State.
