Conan O'Brien Way? He'll Have to Work for It

If the talk show host wants a street named after him, he will have to do some volunteer work, says L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

It started off as a joke, but if TBS talk show host Conan O'Brien wants a street named after him in Van Nuys, he will have to work for it by volunteering, according to Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

O'Brien may have been kidding, but both Villaraigosa and Los Angeles City Councilman Paul Krekorian, who represents the area in which the hypothetical "Conan O'Brien Way" would be located, have responded seriously.

On Wednesday, Villaraigosa posted a video on his YouTube channel featuring many different Los Angeles residents offering volunteer options for O'Brien.

On his show, O'Brien picked out a dusty, dirty industrial street in Van Nuys called West Raymer Street, which he wanted renamed in his honor as Conan O'Brien Way. Oprah Winfrey recently had a street named after her in Chicago, and O'Brien joked that he was looking for the same.

"I've been here in Los Angeles for 22 months," said O'Brien. "Isn't it time I got a street named after me?"

Also, on June 16, Krekorian tweeted the following message: Hey @ConanOBrien, you're right - Raymer could use an upgrade. As the rep for Van Nuys, would love to work with you to make it happen.

"I don't particularly care to have any part of my district be the butt of jokes," the Contra Costa Times quoted Krekorian as saying. "But I always try to turn lemons into lemonade. What started out as a comedy bit has raised the opportunity to improve a blighted" district in Van Nuys.

So apparently, Conan O'Brien Way could happen, but it will take a little elbow grease from the red-haired comedian.
