Day 1: Countdown to the Colfax World Fair—Saving the Best for Last

Colfax Charter Elementary School in Valley Village hosts this 'old world fair' on Saturday. Here are some featured attractions.

We’re in the final day of our 20-Day Countdown to the Colfax World Fair, and we’ve saved the best features for last. Here are some highlights that you’ll see on Saturday.

Attraction: Slideasaurus

This is the kind of ride that makes spectators’ jaws drop. It’s not Spielberg, but this dinosaur is 85 feet long and features a 190-foot continuous climb and 180-degree slide. A truly Jurassic experience!

Booth: Recycled Costumes

Uber-designer Ann Closs-Farley is many things: She has earned multiple Ovation, LA Weekly and Garland Awards, she was the costume designer for Toy Story: The Musical and the new Pee-wee Herman show on Broadway and she has led recycled-fashion workshops sponsored by C.A.R.S at the Santa Monica Arts Festival and Getty Museum. Ann and her team will be creating amazing, custom-made costumes from recycled materials that can be modeled throughout the day. How many blue bins will we need to order after the fair?

Entertainment: 2nd Grade – Vaudeville

Second-grade teacher Paige Gage started her Vaudeville show over a decade ago to show her students how friends and family used to entertain each other before TV and video games. These 7- and 8-year olds will be singing Baby Face and Boogie Woogie March from 2 to 2:15 pm. It’s a sneak preview of their full-length show at Colfax on June 10. This is a Colfax tradition you won’t want to miss!

Silent Auction Item: 3-Night Club Med Vacation Package for Two

Coast Travel Services Inc. is donating this dream vacation to your choice of Ixtapa, Cancun, Sandpiper Bay, Florida, Punta Cana, Columbus Isle, Turks or Caicos. Do the right thing: Bring your spouse and leave the kids with Grandma.

Special Featured Area: Toddler Town

This is a whole area geared toward babies and toddlers. My Gym will be hosting classes throughout the day, and the Wild Animal Kingdom inflatable, Duck Pond, Noodle Art, Dress a Bear and healthy snacks will keep your little tykes busy and ready for a nice long afternoon nap.

The Colfax World Fair Countdown Day 3 winner is Leslie Clay, who’s been wanting to win more than anyone can imagine.

Colfax Charter Elementary School is highlighting these daily features on its Facebook and Twitter pages, which are linked to the school website. Anyone who replies, retweets, or leaves a comment on Patch will be entered into a daily drawing to win a Colfax World Fair T-shirt and 10 tickets to the fair. Winners will be announced each following day.

The Colfax World Fair takes place Saturday from noon to 7 p.m. at Colfax Charter Elementary School, 11724 Addison St., Valley Village. This is Colfax’s most profitable annual fundraiser, and all proceeds pay for student enrichment and traditional programs that have been slashed by LAUSD budget cuts.
