Day 9: Countdown to the Colfax World Fair—Fun With Lots of Mexican Flair

Colfax Charter Elementary School in Valley Village hosts this 'old world fair' on June 4. Here are some featured attractions.

We’re down to Day 9 in our 20-Day Countdown to the Colfax World Fair, Valley Village's biggest annual event. Because we are proud of cultural diversity, today we’ll be featuring items with a Mexican flavor. Here we go de nueve días:

Silent Auction Item: Vicente Fernández Concert Tickets

Great house seats to see the hugely popular El Rey de la Canción Ranchera (The King of the Ranchera) at Universal's Gibson Amphitheater in November. These seats are so close, you’ll be able to invite him out for margaritas after the show.

Food Vendor: Tacos

Traditional Mexican tacos made by Hilda Rivera and her husband, Ricardo. Not the kind made at the kitchenless fast-food place down the street.

Game: Can Smash

... Or rather, the MEXI-CAN SMASH. Our neighbors to the south will be smashing! And probably not laughing very hard at these incredibly bad puns.

Entertainment: Colfax 4th Grade

These 9- and 10-year-olds will be prancing to the Mexican Hat Dance song and trying not to stomp the props. Hopefully, none of the kindergartners will be hiding under the sombreros.

Attraction: Water Wars

You probably won’t be fighting over who gets the Colorado River, but you do get to attack your friends with water balloons.

We’re also promoting the Spanish-language commercial made for our public service announcement recorded by Colfax third-grader Ryan Estrada. Muy buena, Ryan! Follow the posted video link for Feria Mudial de Colfax 2011.

Colfax Charter Elementary School is highlighting these daily features on its Facebook and Twitter pages, which are linked to the school website. Anyone who replies, retweets, or leaves a comment on Patch will be entered into a daily drawing to win a Colfax World Fair T-shirt and 10 tickets to the fair. Winners will be announced the day after.

The winner for Day 11 is Laura Holmes, who commented on Patch. Congratulations Laura!

The Colfax World Fair takes place June 4 from noon to 7 p.m. at Colfax Charter Elementary School, 11724 Addison St., Valley Village. This is Colfax’s most profitable annual fundraiser, and all proceeds pay for student enrichment as well as traditional programs that have been slashed by LAUSD budget cuts.
