Family Displaced, Dog Killed in NoHo House Fire

A family of four was left homeless and their dog was killed in a fire at a home in North Hollywood, a fire department spokesman said Saturday.

The blaze inside a 95-year-old, one-story home at 11342 Martha St. was reported at 6:09 p.m. Friday by someone walking by the house, fire department spokesman Brian Humphrey said.

The department dispatched 37 firefighters to the scene and confined the flames to one bedroom and the attic, Humphrey said.

The fire was knocked down in about 20 minutes, Humphrey said.

The family was not home and the house was not equipped with a functional smoke alarms, Humphrey added.

Firefighters rescued the family’s cat but couldn’t save the pet dog, he added.

Emergency housing money was given to the family by the American Red Cross, Humphrey said.

The loss is estimated at $125,000 damage to the structure and $50,000 to the home’s contents, Humphrey added.

The cause of the fire was found to be electrical, he said.
