Free Comic Book Day at Blastoff on May 4

Grab a free issue at the local comic book shop, which opened last fall in NoHo.

Blastoff Comics in the NoHo Arts District is hosting its first Free Comic Book Day on May 4 and best-selling artist JK Woodward will be on hand all day to paint an original piece, nohoartsdistrict.com reports.

Free Comic Book Day was actually created by the industry's retail community as a method to spread popularity of the medium.

Although free comics will be given away all day, shop owner and dealer Jud Meyers told Patch last year that he makes sure all year long that no kid leaves his business without a complimentary issue.

"I have more comics than I can possibly ever do anything with in a lifetime. I'm giving them away," he said. "In my store, no child ever walks out without a comic book."
