Homes Evacuated As Crews Battle Fire In Saugus Area

SAUGUS, CA — A fast-moving brushfire broke out Thursday afternoon in the Saugus area and grew to more than 100 acres in about an hour.

The "Texas Fire" was reported at 1:47 p.m. as burning uphill in the 30500 block of Bouquet Canyon Road, near the Texas Canyon Ranger Station, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

By 2:45 p.m., the blaze had burned about 100 acres and was 0 percent contained, Angeles National Forest reported.

About 50 homes were evacuated on Bouquet Canyon Road between Vasquez Canyon Road and Spunky Canyon, according to Shirley Miller of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station. That stretch of Bouquet Canyon Road was also closed to traffic.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department called in a second-alarm response, which provided about 200 firefighters total to battle the blaze alongside 115 Angeles National Forest firefighters, the departments said.

The fire was 5 percent contained, and burning about 130 acres, at 3:30 p.m., according to the Angeles National Forest.
