How is Sleep Apnea Diagnosed?

Sleep apnea is diagnosed after a full physical exam is done to obtain symptoms and medical history, and a sleep study is performed.

Sleep apnea is diagnosed after a complete exam is done and a sleep study has been performed. After evaluating your symptoms, our North Hollywood dentist will obtain all medical and family history followed by a physical exam. Identifying risk factors can help us determine the best way to proceed with your diagnosis and treatment.

Keeping a sleep diary can help you spot patterns and symptoms of your sleep apnea. Each time you sleep, write down when you go to bed and when you get up. Note how awake or alert you feel and write down when you feel sleepy, drowsy or have other symptoms throughout the day. This diary can provide us with critical information about your sleep. We may ask whether you snore, wake feeling as though you are choking, or if you struggle with irritability or depression during the day.

During the physical exam, we will check for enlarged tonsils or uvula, the swelling or enlargement of the soft palate, and any symptoms of a narrow airway. A sleep study will need to be performed either in a sleep lab or at your home to fully diagnose you, though. During these tests, your breathing patterns, blood oxygen level, and other body levels and movements as you sleep will be recorded. We will then analyze the results and explain your treatment options. Call us today to learn more about sleep apnea testing or to schedule your appointment with our expert in sleep apnea in North Hollywood.
