Indie Coffee's Owner Spills a New Secret — The North Hollywood Independent Films Movie Theatre

'I mainly want to work within NoHo's four walls,' says Jose Alcedo about his new weekly film and art showcase.

Back in October our writer Danielle Directo-Meston paid a visit to in the NoHo Arts District, which she found to be "tucked somewhat secretively inside ." Danielle titled her story "

Indie's owner, Jose Alcedo, originally opened further north on Lankershim Boulevard seven years ago as an outdoor location at , but moved to his current location at World Sports Center about a year ago.

Alcedo has had another secret he's been quietly working on, another "indie" secret, if you will. Last weekend, he premiered the The North Hollywood Independent Films Movie Theatre.

You wouldn't know it by looking at it, but the World Sports Center has an entire second level to it housing another workout floor, several offices, and a beautiful, cozy 70-seat movie theater equipped with a surround sound system. It is here that Alcedo said he has been able to make a seven-year dream of starting a weekly film and art showcase come true.

"My idea came mainly from the other location, from being around other artists, actors, writers, producers," said Alcedo, who has lived in the NoHo area for 30 years. "My biggest question was, after you are done, what do you do with it? Submit it to the Sundance Film Festival, Cannes and other festivals here and there. After that, often nothing else happens to it. These can be great movies. Why not share that experience with the community, the NoHo arts community?"

The space is perfect for what Alcedo wants to do, which is host regular weekend film fests that will also include live acts.

"I'm trying to bring back vaudeville. We will have some live music, like an acoustic guitar, some comedians, an MC, and maybe show like five to six films, and have the filmmakers there to talk about them," Alcedo said.

His plan is to present this all — Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays — for the very indie price of $5. But until he kicks things off with a grand opening, the event will be every Saturday at 8 p.m. with a complimentary entrance fee.

"I just want the buzz to get out there that, hey, there's another independent movie theater, but not corporate independent, it's independent independent," Alcedo said.

Alcedo also plans to keep the showcase a "NoHo only" affair.

"I mainly want to work within NoHo's four walls first and not get too crazy and further out where all of a sudden you get away from yourself and you don't know what you are doing," Alcedo said. "So I'm trying to work within NoHo's four walls and get it going. Since I've been here for 30 years and been in business for seven, I want to give something back to my customers. So many of them, it's their dream, they came here from a long way away and have a film. If it's something people are willing to pay $5 for, let's put it up."

The North Hollywood Independent Films Movie Theatre showcase is happening tonight at 8 p.m. A Facebook page and website are in the works. In the meantime, contact for more information.
