When North Hollywood was in decline in the 1970s, McCreary led the fight to bring redevelopment to the community his family had built. He was also among the leaders in the effort to bring the Red Line subway to the San Fernando Valley.

McCreary was a member of the Los Angeles County Commission for Public Social Services, executive director of the Republican Central Committee of Los Angeles County, a member of the board of directors of the Friends of the Campo de Cahuenga Historical Memorial Association and an adviser to The Museum of the San Fernando Valley.

McCreary was also the author of a 1974 history of the Mexican Revolution “From Glory to Oblivion.”

“In all the years that I’ve served the city, Guy was known to be a great man who loved the valley and who was always very active in the community,” LaBonge said of McCreary after learning of his death.
