L.A. Family Housing in North Hollywood Among Recipients of Federal Grant

The money is part of $201 million HUD awarded nationally as part of its Continuum of Care program.

The U.S. Department of Housing today announced $7 million in grants for long-term supportive housing units for the homeless in Los Angeles, and in North Hollywood was one of the recipients.

The money is part of $201 million HUD awarded nationally as part of its Continuum of Care program. The funds must be used for permanent and transitional housing and services for homeless people, including job training, health care, mental health counseling, substance abuse treatment and child care.

L.A. Family Housing recently cut the ribbon on a new permanent housing facility for formerly long-term homeless people:

The Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles will distribute its share of the money to subsidize 110 housing units specifically for homeless people with disabilities such as mental illness, chronic drug or alcohol problems or AIDS.

HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan said that despite the greatest economic decline since the Great Depression, "the total number of homeless Americans is declining, in large part because of these funds."

The $7 million grant was divided among the following five service agencies that will operate the programs:

-- St. Joseph Center ($1.8 million);

-- San Fernando Valley Community Mental Health Center ($1.4 million);

-- County of Los Angeles Department of Mental Health ($1.4 million);

-- Step Up On Second -- Michael's Village ($1.3 million); and

-- L.A. Family Housing -- Day Street Apartments ($922,560).
