Man With Bloodied Knives Shot By Police On Victory Boulevard

According to police, a man who had been slashing tires and holding a knife to his own throat, advanced on officers, prompting the shooting.

VAN NUYS, CA — Los Angeles police shot a man armed with bloody knives on Victory Boulevard Sunday night, and he died at the scene.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officers responded to a 911 call about a man with a knife and arrived to find a man who had been slashing tires standing atop a car and holding a knife to his own throat. The man who was in his late 40s or 50s allegedly advanced toward the officers after ignoring repeated requests to drop the knives, according to the LAPD.

The incident occurred near the intersection of Matilija Avenue and Victory Boulevard shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday, according to the LAPD.

"Officers saw the suspect near Victory and Matilija holding 2 bloody knives. Officers attempted to de-escalate the situation, continually asking the suspect to drop his knives and peacefully end the situation," the LAPD said on social media.

Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene. His name was withheld pending notification to the next of kin.

The suspect's knives were recovered and booked into evidence, police said.

Victory Boulevard between Woodman and Hazeltine avenues was temporarily closed for the shooting investigation, police said.
