Man Suspected Of Shooting 5 Outside Valley Swap Meet Arrested

Police tracked down the 37-year-old suspect in the shooting to Texas, where he was taken into custody.

PANORAMA CITY, CA — A multi-agency task force arrested a man wanted in connection with a San Fernando valley shooting that killed one man and wounded four others outside the Valley Swap Meet earlier this month, authorities announced Wednesday.

Authorities caught up with 37-year-old Luis Enriquez Hernandez in Texas Tuesday where he was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Hernandez was arrested in the Houston area by a task force that included personnel from the FBI and the Houston Police Department, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The shooting occurred on the afternoon of Aug. 3 near Parthenia Street and Tobias Avenue at the scene of a three-car crash, according to the LAPD. While the drivers stood outside their vehicles exchanging information, a gunman walked up and opened fire on them before fleeing on foot, surveillance video from the scene shows.

Jonathan Santillano, 37, of Sylmar was pronounced dead at the scene. His brother told reporters he was a bystander, who stopped to help at the scene of teh crash. Four other people were treated for wounds but survived.

"Subsequent investigation identified the suspect as 37-year-old Luis Enriquez Hernandez," the LAPD said in a statement.

"Detectives learned after the shooting, Hernandez fled to Texas," the LAPD said. "With the assistance of the Federal Bureau of Investigation- Houston Violent Crime Task Force and Houston Police Department-North Crime Suppression Team, they discovered Luis Enriquez Hernandez was staying in a residence in Spring, Texas, outside of Houston."
