Neshkinukat - Native American Elder Art showing through December 12 at NoHoSAC

Seventeen Native American artists share their vision and vivid artwork in the first stop of a Southern California tour

The North Hollywood Senior Arts Center Gallery bursts with color and spirit with a show whose artists share a common ancestry...one that spans Turtle Island from end to end. And that is probably the only thing that could be considered “common”. The life experiences that have lead to the work produced in Neshkinukat - Native American Elder Art - are anything but common.

Curator and producer Kat High has spent her life involved in Native American rights, in education, in cultural preservation, and in storytelling. Kat is a living resource of cultural knowledge, fluent in the art of the story and of the ancient art of basketry. She can also cook a mean rabbit stew and make a blanket from the hides that will actually keep you warm in a cold winter’s night.

Artists like Billywarsoldier accept their role in the native community as warrior-artists. Billy once told Kat he paints with oils so that in case he is arrested, the canvas can be wrapped, and when he is released from prison the paint will still be workable.

Carlos Reynosa is both a musician and a photographer...equally talented in both disciplines, and like many of his peers, he is an activist, using words, songs and imagery to inspire us all to care for the earth and its inhabitants.

Bernie Granados Jr’s art, which often features horses, was chosen as the cover piece for the show. Bernie is internationally acclaimed and worked in numerous mediums, including acrylics and clay.
