New Bar May Be Coming to NoHo Arts District

There’s a curious sign built into the sidewalk at the entrance of 5249 Lankershim Boulevard.  

“The Treasure Trove” greets pedestrians in front of the late-1930s building, and I’d noticed it as I wandered around the area after a tip that a liquor license notification had been posted at the address.

Public records show there’d been a bookstore and art gallery in the 1990s. Other than the mid-century-style sign embedded into the ground, there’s no other indication as to what may have once stood behind the darkened windows. 

But soon, the NoHo Arts District property may be brought back to life as a new bar and arcade, joining many other new businesses that have recently opened over the past several months.

A representative at the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control said a liquor license application for the sale of beer and wine at a public premise was filed in late May. The application lists the business name as “NOHO BARCODE,” and a Facebook page for NoHo Barcade surfaced in March. 

Photos of construction posted in April show the interior was stripped to show off the high, wood ceilings and expose the natural brick walls. By June, a sturdy wood bar had been installed, and construction plans show pinball and video game machines will be added.

The new bar will be just a few doors north of  and , and across the street from the . Since an investigation and public comment period – in addition to the application posted at the address – is required by the ABC, it may be a few months until we see NoHo Barcade’s doors open. In which case, Arts District bargoers and arcade enthusiasts have plenty of time to squirrel away those extra laundry quarters.
