Before Aaron Sorkin became Hollywood’s hottest writer for feature films (“Moneyball,” “The Social Network,” “Charlie Wilson’s War,” “The American President,” more) and television (“The West Wing,” “Sports Night,” “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip”), he was a playwright. His breakthrough stage production was his 1990 play “A Few Good Men,” which he later adapted successfully for the screen.
“A Few Good Men” is a gripping military courtroom thriller. A young marine, apparently unfit to endure the physical rigors of Marine duty, has died. Was it an accident, or were the circumstances of his death more sinister? Two marines in his unit are indicted for a variety of charges including murder. Their only defense against the prospect of long prison terms is mounted by their Marine attorneys, Lt. j.g. Daniel Kaffee (himself the son of a revered military attorney) and Lt. Cmdr. Joanne Galloway, neither of whom has successfully mounted a criminal defense in a courtroom before. It will take all their intelligence, skill and perseverance to fight a sadistic military cult within the walls of Guantanamo Bay if Kaffee and Galloway are to win their clients’ liberty and prevail against those who would subvert the Constitution and stain the honor of Marines stationed throughout the globe who serve America with courage and distinction.
This play is presented by the company Rise Above Theatre Movement, which produced a well-received mounting of “The Last Days of Judas Iscariot” in 2011. Their 2012 season will include, in addition to the current production, “Take Me Out,” “The Little Dog Laughed,” “Pillow Man,” “Seven Santas,” and an original for Christmas, “Stranded at LAX.”
Company founder Kenne Guillory directs. The company is creative and busy, so most roles are double or triple cast. The cast includes (in alphabetical order) : Joel Anderson, Joshua Bateman, Jesse Bernel, Andrew Campbell, Kip Canyon, David Castellivi, Russell Cummings, Katherine DePangher, Dennis Desling, Jason Paul Evans, Cody Gigold, Kenne Guillory, Zachary Golovan, Zachary Goodrich, Darian Hickman, Michael Hudson, Garrett Johnson, Melinda MacKay, Ethan McDowell, Ryan Mercado, Ryan Neal, April Nicholson, Bryant Romo, Marlon Sanders and Phillip Wheeler.
Assistant directors: Garrett Johnson. Set and lighting designs: Rocco Ambrosio. Art work and design: Richie Ferra.
Kenne Guillory, a graduate of Santa Monica College, directed and appeared in Rise Above Theatre Movement’s inaugural production, “The Last Days of Judas Iscariot.”
