Primary Results: Prop 28 Yes but 29 No, Alarcon Loses to Former Aide Bocanegra

30th Congressional District - Thanks to redistricting and the state's new "top two" election system, the high-profile battle between incumbent Democratic Reps. Brad Sherman and Howard Berman will carry on until November, when the two lawmakers will square off in a bid to represent a newly drawn 30th congressional district.

Sherman, D-Sherman Oaks, was the top vote-getter in Tuesday's election, with Berman, D-Van Nuys, close behind.

29th Congressional District - City Councilman Tony Cardenas easily won this race and will face David Hernandez in the November runoff, guaraneeing one of them will be come the first Latino to represent the San Fernando Valley in Congress. Read more about this race here -

Assembly District 39 - City Councilman Richard Alarcon lost a bitter, negative battle with candidate Raul Bocanegra, who was once his aide. The two will now face each other in a runoff in November. This district covers most of North Hollywood and stretches as far north As Sylmar and the Angeles National Forest. L. Alarcon is also facing felony voter fraud charges:

Assembly District 46 - City Councilman Paul Krekorian's Chief of Staff Adrin Nazarian won this six-way race and will face Republican Jay Stern in November. This is a new district that represents Studio City, the Tolucans, Valley Village, Valley Glen, part of North Hollywood and other neighborhoods. (Editor's Note: City News Service originally reported that Brian Johnson finished second in this race the day after the election, but after all the votes were tallied it was reported on June 27 that Stern had in fact finished second by a handful of votes.)

Prop 28 & 29

California voters adopted a change to term limits for state legislators, while a proposal to increase the tobacco tax to fund cancer research was narrowly defeated, according to results released early today by the Secretary of State's Office.

Proposition 28, was approved by a margin of 61.4 percent-38.6 percent with all of the state's 21,993 precincts reporting. Proposition 29 was defeated 50.8 percent-49.2 percent.

Los Angeles County District Attorney

Jackie Lacey and Alan Jackson -- two Los Angeles County prosecutors -- will face each other in November in a race to replace their boss after L.A. City Attorney Carmen Trutanich failed to make the cut even though he had more money and name-recognition than they did, election results showed today.

The top vote-getter in Tuesday's race was Chief Deputy District Attorney Jackie Lacey. With 100 percent of votes counted, she had 203,889 votes, or 31.9 per cent, according to election results released this morning by the Los Angeles County registrar of voters.
