WATCH: Registry Helps SFV Homeless Get New Housing
The San Fernando Valley Homeless Coalition and L.A. Family Housing are getting the most vulnerable homeless off the streets.
Finding the homeless, then finding ways to make homes for them.
The 100,000 Homes Campaign is a nationwide effort to find and place the most vulnerable homeless individuals into permanent housing by July 2013. The San Fernando Valley Homeless Coalition and in North Hollywood joined the 100,000 Homes Campaign and conducted a registry week in the San Fernando Valley communities of North Hollywood and Sun Valley at the end of August. The SFV Homeless Coalition's goal is the find permanent housing for 75 of the vulnerable homeless persons that were identified.
60 volunteers helped conduct the on-site surveys, which took place over several days at sixteen pre-determined locations throughout North Hollywood and Sun Valley. The activity happened in the very early hours of the morning, with the volunteers trekking through parks, alleys and even shrubbery along the freeways between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m., just to find and interview the area's homeless population. The volunteers had clipboards and forms in hand, and respectfully interviewed the people they discovered living in the streets and without shelter. Along with gathering the homeless individual's personal information and history, the volunteers took photographs of each individual for visual identification. The volunteers also presented a $10 gift card from McDonald's to the interviewees as a goodwill gesture.
