Supervisors Molina, Knabe to Join Mayor in Endorsing Cardenas For Congress

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa endorsed City Councilman Tony Cardenas in his run for Congress on Tuesday, and later today L.A. County Supervisors Gloria Molina and Don Knabe will also be throwing their support behind Cardenas, according to Cardenas' office. 

"Time and again Tony Cardenas has brought stakeholders together to solve our most difficult problems from authoring groundbreaking gang intervention legislation in the Legislature to reforming the business tax code to create local jobs here on the City Council," said Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa in a press release. "Tony Cardenas has always been a champion Valley families can count on, and in Congress he'll make sure the Valley is never left behind."

Last week, Cardenas picked up the endorsements of California’s Assembly Speaker John Pérez and Senate President pro Tempore Darrell Steinberg.

Cardenas is working to become by running in the new 29th District, which has been and estimated to have a voting base of 69 percent Latinos.

"I’m proud to have worked side-by-side with Mayor Villaraigosa in the State Assembly to deliver balanced budgets and on the City Council to create jobs and make our streets cleaner and safer for our kids. I’m honored by the Mayor’s endorsement," said Cardenas. "The new 29th District gives our community the opportunity to make history again, and as the first Latino to represent the Valley in Congress, I will work hard every day to make the Valley a place our families can be proud to call home."

So far the only other candidate to announce a potential run in the 29th District is David Hernandez, the president of the San Fernando Chamber of Commerce, who is a Latino and a Republican.
