Suspect Commits Suicide During Confrontation With Burbank Police

BURBANK, CA - A man who was wounded in a shootout with police officers in Burbank today shot himself during the confrontation and died at a hospital, authorities said.

The shooting was reported shortly after midnight at a McDonald's restaurant in the 2500 block of Hollywood Way, said Burbank police Sgt. Claudio Losacco.

The wounded man, about 25-30 years of age, died at a hospital shortly after 2 a.m., coroner's Assistant Chief Ed Winter said. His name was withheld, pending notification of kin.

Police went to the location on report of a man causing a disturbance, Losacco said.

"As the officers arrived, they were advised the suspect told McDonald's employees that he was armed with a gun. The first responding officers evacuated the employees, who were the only people inside," Losacco said.

"The officers confirmed the suspect was armed with a gun and tried to communicate with him, but he would not comply with their orders to exit," Losacco said.

"The man fired multiple rounds and leveled the gun at the officers. At this point, an officer-involved shooting took place. Three officers fired upon the suspect, striking him multiple times.

"The suspect jumped out of the restaurant, via a window that had been shattered and into the drive-thru area, where officers saw him turn the gun on himself," Losacco said.

Paramedics took the wounded man to a hospital. No officers were injured. Anyone with information on the case was urged to call Detective Emil Brimway at (818) 238-3210, or Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.
