Taxi Customers Leaving Bob Hope Airport to be Hit With Minimum $15.50 Fare

The Burbank Transportation Commission approves the increase to start Sept. 23.

The Marriott Hotel is one of the largest and most popular hotels near the Bob Hope Airport. It frequently hosts major conventions, such as the upcoming Hollywood Show, an autograph signing convention that will feature 67 celebrities including Frankie Avalon, Deidre Hall and Morgan Fairchild.

But anyone flying into Bob Hope Airport with luggage who wishes to take a cab to the Marriott, which .51 miles away, according to Mapquest, will have to pay a minimum cab fare of $15.50, starting Sept. 23.

The airport issued a press release recently announcing that all cab fares originating from the airport will be charged a minimum fee of $15.50, regardless of the distance travelled. The Burbank Transportation Commission approved the fare after receiving a request from G & S Transit Management Inc., one of three taxi operators authorized by the City to provide taxi service in Burbank.

“The request for a minimum rate from Bob Hope Airport stems from the frequent number of short trips within the city,” according to the press release. “As indicated in the G & S Transit Management, Inc. request, taxi operators must wait in the airport taxi queue for long periods, and then often get requests for short trips within Burbank. The minimum fare structure will assist them in making an adequate income.”

The new minimum fare is equivalent to a trip of 4.75 miles, an are that covers almost all of Burbank, North Hollywood and Sun Valley.

According to the Burbank Leader, the current pay rate is a $2.50 charge for the first 1/9 mile or 37 seconds, and 30 cents for each additional 1/9 mile or 37 seconds of wait time or traffic delay. Each ride also imposes a $2.50 gasoline surcharge.

The press release pointed out that several other modes of transportation to and from the Airport are available, which include door-to-door shuttle van service; BurbankBus – operated by the City of Burbank; shuttles from nearby hotels; Metrolink commuter rail service and Amtrak trains directly to the Bob Hope Airport Train Station; and free SuperShuttle rides on demand between the airport and the Downtown Burbank Metrolink Station and the North Hollywood Red Line Station.
