Tom LaBonge and U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree in Griffith Park Today

A 63-foot white fir selected to be the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree will be on display at the Autry National Center in Griffith Park today.

The 114-year-old tree felled in the Stanislaus National Forest is making the rounds locally before heading cross-country to Washington, D.C.

From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., "The People's Tree" will be at the Autry National Center, which is just off Zoo Drive. City Councilman Tom LaBonge is scheduled to speak, as are representatives of the Wells Fargo Foundation and the Angeles, Cleveland and Stanislaus national forests.

As the tree heads east, stops are planned Monday at 10 a.m. at Victoria Gardens Shopping Mall, 12505 N. Main Street in Rancho Cucamonga. It will remain be near the Bass store until about 2 p.m. before moving on to Barstow.

On Saturday, the tree made stops around Castaic.

This year marks the first time since 1995 that the nation's Christmas tree has come from California. And it is only the fourth time since the tradition of securing the Capitol tree from a national forest began in 1970.
