Valley Man Sentenced For Pushing His Mom Out Window

A Valley man who pushed his mom out a second-story window, jumped after her and beat her in front of horrified neighbors was sent to prison.

LOS ANGELES, CA — A man was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison for shoving his 70-year-old mother out of a second-story window during an argument at their Van Nuys apartment, then continuing to attack her on the ground, inflicting ultimately fatal injuries, the District Attorney's Office confirmed Monday.

Fernando Vargas, 42, was found guilty on Friday of second-degree murder in the Oct. 10, 2016, death of Carlota Vargas.

In an unusual circumstance, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Jesic handed down a sentence immediately after the jury's verdict. A court clerk said Vargas' lawyer told the judge his client wasn't interested in waiting to hear his fate.

Prosecutors said the fight happened about 3 a.m. After Vargas pushed his mother out of the window, he jumped out himself and attacked her on the ground outside of the building in the 7400 block of Hazeltine Avenue, where they had lived together for about a decade.

A neighbor said she saw Vargas stomping on the woman and was horrified.

"Somebody yelled out for him to stop and he said that she was going to die anyway so that it didn't matter no more," the witness said.

Vargas was treated for a heal fracture and has been jailed since his arrest.
