Police are investigating to find out how the child came to be wandering the streets unattended.

LOS ANGELES, CA — The family of a 2- or 3-year-old girl found unaccompanied in Van Nuys Tuesday were located after a neighbor saw news reports and called authorities to say they recognized the child.

The toddler was found about 6:30 p.m. in the 7200 block of Kester Avenue, near Sherman Way, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The officers that found her told reporters at the scene that the child was wandering near traffic with no shoes on, potentially unaccounted for hours.
