Glory (1989) in 35mm
Directed by Edward Zwick
Starring Matthew Broderick, Denzel Washington, and Morgan Freeman
Empire and Liberty: The Civil War and the West shows how the institution of slavery and the notion of liberty were intricately tied to westward expansion. Many of the issues raised in the exhibition are also addressed onscreen. Glory is the second movie in the Civil War block.
The 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment was one of the first units in the Union Army made up of African-American soldiers. In Glory, the history of the regiment is detailed, from the racist attitudes that overshadowed its formation to the heroic deeds that solidified the regiment’s legacy.
