What's the Status of North Hollywood's Medical Marijuana Dispensaries?

Marijuana was again in the headlines Wednesday as the FBI in the San Fernando Valley, including two in North Hollywood.

The raids have many residents of North Hollywood and Toluca Lake wondering what is going on. Residents hear of raids and that the city is starting to crack down on shops, yet new shops seem to spring up all the time.

“I hear all the time that there are new ones opening and old ones reopening,” Asha Greenberg, the assistant city attorney who oversees marijuana enforcement, told the Los Angeles Times. “It will always be a moving a target.”

At the moment, the city has sent letters over the last month ordering 201 marijuana dispensaries to close down, according to the Times. Of those, 20 shops are in the North Hollywood area. The letters warn that the city could sue violators, seek financial penalties and padlock the property. These are shops that did not apply to participate in a city lottery that will select 100 pot shops to remain open, while closing all others. The lottery has yet to be scheduled. A total of 228 dispensaries applied for the lottery.
