WINNETKA, CA — Two men in their 20s were killed early Tuesday when a speeding BMW crashed into a light pole in Winnetka, authorities said.
The solo-vehicle crash was reported shortly after 2 a.m. near Parthenia Street and Sunny Brae Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
The BMW was traveling west at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control and struck the pole, the Los Angeles Police Department told NBC Los Angeles.
The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. Firefighters used hydraulic tools and removed the vehicle's roof to free the driver, who was taken to a hospital and later died, according to authorities and KTLA.
Video from the scene showed the mangled sedan partially wrapped around the pole, with its engine severed from the vehicle.
No other vehicles were involved, police said. Drugs and alcohol were not believed to have contributed to the crash.
The identities of the men were not immediately released.
The crash remained under investigation Tuesday.
