Bear Faces Off With 2 Coyotes In Valley Driveway: Video

TARZANA, CA — A bear and two coyotes were captured on camera during an unusual early-morning encounter outside a Tarzana home, according to reports.

Homeowner Richard Hurwitz told KTLA he received a Ring camera notification at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday and was stunned when he checked the footage.

Video provided to KTLA showed a bear, which appeared to have a tag, walking down a path toward the driveway before encountering a coyote. A second, smaller coyote remained nearby.

The larger coyote repeatedly approached the bear before retreating when the bear turned toward it, according to the footage. Hurwitz told ABC 7 he believed the larger animal was trying to protect the smaller coyote.

"The bigger coyote was really trying to keep the bear away from the little one," Hurwitz told the station.

The bear eventually moved away, though the larger coyote continued advancing toward it several times as it left the area, ABC 7 reported.

Hurwitz told KTLA he believed the two coyotes may have been a mother and her offspring.

The encounter happened in a residential neighborhood just a few miles from Ventura Boulevard and the 101 Freeway, according to ABC 7.
