Bicyclist Shot By LAPD During Pursuit

Officers opened fire on the cyclist when they spotted a gun on him as he attempted to flee pursuit, according to the LAPD.

VAN NUYS, CA — Los Angeles police officers shot a bicyclist they were attempting to detain Tuesday night in the San Fernando Valley. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the arresting officers said they saw a firearm in the man's possession.

The cyclist, a man in his 40s, described by police as a "known suspect" was rushed to a nearby hospital in stable condition, according to the LAPD.

The shooting occurred in Vanu Nuys near Victory Boulevard and Tyrone Avenue shortly before 4 p.m. Tuesday.

"Officers attempted to detain the suspect, as they were doing so, they observed the suspect with a firearm at which time an officer-involved shooting occurred," the LAPD reported. "The suspect fled on foot southbound on Tyrone toward Victory Blvd when a second officer-involved shooting occurred."

It was unclear if the suspect fired or brandished a weapon at the pursuing officers.

As the man ran southbound on Tyrone Avenue when officers shot at him again, and he was wounded and taken into custody, according to the LAPD. He was hospitalized in stable condition.

According to the police department, no officers or bystanders were wounded in the shooting. A firearm was found at the scene, police said.

An investigation is ongoing, causing police to close he area to traffic Tuesday evening. Commuters were advised to avoid the area.
