Cat Killed, 1 Hurt In Fall Flee Three-Story Apartment Fire

One family was able to escape the blaze with their dog, but their cat didn't make it out.

RESEDA, CA — One person was hurt in a fall while escaping a fire in a three-story apartment building in the San Fernando Valley Thursday, and a family pet died in the blaze.

The fire broke out in a garden-style apartment building in Reseda just after 4:30 p.m. Thursday in the 19600 block of West Sherman Way, according to Margaret Stewart.

"The two occupants of the unit escaped uninjured with their dog," Stewart said. "Sadly, their cat was located deceased inside the unit. One patient from an adjacent unit is being evaluated (and likely transported) for an injury sustained during a fall while running from the unit."
